Oedipus... Oedipus... Oedipus...

Oedipus Rex by Sophocles is a tremendous story. As for the first time I received the booklet of the play, I was so excited to read through the text and explore what is the idea of the play. So, the night after I received the booklet, I try to read the play. The first line in the play has given me a headache! Gosh! I got nothing from my reading. But, I just keep reading, pretend that I understand and follow the plan, even though in fact, I didn’t get it!
After having tutorial classes, I have widened up my mind a little bit. At least I got the storyline. I know the development of the story. At least I know that Oedipus married with his own mother and killed his own father by his hand. But, a few discussions during tutorial, I think now I am totally got the play. For me, Oedipus Rex is a nice play, the story of how blindness of heart can damage somebody’s life. In this play, faith plays a big role.
Some people may not accept what has being written to him/ her by God and decide to escape himself/herself from reality. But, we just can plan our life, we can’t decide what will happen in our future.
I am on my way to admire this play (I hope so…). The message that Sophocles tried to convey in his play, bring meaning to people nowadays.

An ‘unknown’ play…

This time, I will make a reflection on one of the most exciting activity that being handled during lecture. I like to call this activity as ‘an unknown play’, because we have to act out the play that we don’t know how many characters are involved, where is the setting taking place and overall, we just know the language but not the content of the text. The text that we are required to read is one of the abstract, taken from ‘Now Read On’ and it is sort of short dialogue.
Our respective lecturer has divided us into pair or three in a group and asked us to read the text. He gave us sometimes. After that he told us that we have to act it out, create the situation for the dialogue based on our own creativity. My partner for this activity was Hazelynn. We have (me and Hazelynn) make a discussion and we have create our own situation. It was happened between husband and wife in the study room. But, unfortunately for us, because we don’t have the chance to perform our play, just keep it as a precious experience. I was so excited with this activity, because I was never expect that some of my course mates have a talent in acting. They are very talented and they have make the activity becomes very interesting. Besides, I was also interested with Dr Edwin’s experience with my seniors. They all were using the same text like us, but they managed to create situation which was totally out of my thinking. One of them acts out the dialogue, not as a human, but as a chicken. We have had a big laugh as we listen to the story.
So, I think the activity is not just entertaining, but informative as well.

Different perception towards stages of life…

The Four Ages of Man (William Butler Yeats)
He with body waged a fight,
But body won; it walks upright.
Then he struggled with the heart;
Innocent and peace depart.
Then he struggled with the mind;
His proud heart he left behind.
Now his wars on God begin;
At stroke of midnight God shall win

As in the lecture, we have discussed about one of the William Shakespeare’s famous poems ‘As You Like It’. The poem is mainly about the stages of life in Shakespeare’s point of view. Our instructor also asked us to have a look at other literary works and one of them is ‘The Four Ages of Man’ by William Butler Yeats. As for the first time read through the poem, I feel very annoying because I can’t able to understand the poem very well. I keep asking myself, why I should read this poem! But, after my third time of reading, finally I got the idea and connotative meaning from the text. Both of the authors, William Shakespeare and William Butler Yeats convey the same idea in their works but in the different perception. They use the same concept of stages of man’s life but they have their own perception towards the subject matter.
